Records Fall at the 20th Poland Invitational

They say that records are made to be broken and that’s what happened at today’s Poland Invitational Track & Field Meet. 28 boys and 28 girls competed for honors. In the record-setting category the Maplewood Boys 4 x 800 meter relay team of Allen Sparks, Jake Hall, Derek Morrison and Tristan Dahmen set a new mark at 8:02.41 breaking the old record of 8:03.17 set by Reynoldsberg in 2008.

PolandInvitational2015-05In the 100 meter dash Joe Harrington from Austintown Fitch eclipsed the record set by James Allen of East in 2008. Joe ran a 10.75. Joe also came back  to win the 200 and ran the anchor leg for the winning 4 x 200 meter relay team to earn him running MVP honors.

Joe Rossetti of Akron St Vincent St Mary broke probably the longest standing record in the 3200 meter run. Joe ran a 9:20.87 to break the 1998 record of Chris Acs of Niles McKinley.

Randy McMullen of Kent Roosevelt and Jenna Fesemyer of Southeast broke their own Poland 100 meter dash records, Randy at 19.42 and Jenna at 21.66. Randy also set the new standard in the seated shot put with a throw of 25 feet 8 3/4 inches. This was also a State Record.

Chad Zallow from Warren JFK ran an amazing 13.66 in the 110HH although it was wind-aided at 2.1

Ryan Adams of CVCA set the new standard in the 800 meters. Ryan, last years’ Division 2 state 800 meter champion ran a 1:54.58.

Iron Bulldog trophy winners (athlete scoring most points in the meet) went to Kamar Majid of Akron Firestone and Aisha Jackson of Warren G. Harding. Running MVPs were Joe Harrington of Austintown Fitch who took the 100, 200 and 1st place member of 4 x 200 relay. Aisha Jackson took both hurdle events and was a member of the third place 4 x 200 relay. Field events MVPs were Kamar Majid of Firestone who won the long jump (20′ 3 1/4 “) and was 2nd in the high jump (6′ 2″). Lauren Jones of Garretsville Garfield was the girls field MVP taking the shot put (40′ 1/2″) and 2nd in the discus with a throw of 129′ 3″.

PolandInvitational2015-04Teams champions were Warren G. Harding with 74 points and Austintown Fitch with 91 points.

This years Poland Invitational Track  and Field Classic will be contested on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at Poland Seminary Stadium. This years meet will feature many track and field athletes who are veterans of state and national competition.

zallow_arcadiaCHAD ZALLOW- Warren JFK – Shown here at the Arcadia Meet in California. Chad ran a 13.50 in the 110 HH which is the #1 time in the US in that event. Below winning the D3 state 110HH championship – 2 time champion.

DISCUS (Boys) – The discus event will feature the 2nd, 3rd and 5th ranking athletes in Ohio according to milesplit.com. Christian Smith of McDonald is currently ranked 2nd in Ohio at 189’0″. Dante Penza of Cardinal Mooney is ranked 3rd with a throw of 175’8″. Bucyrus Palo of Newton Falls is currently 5th with a throw of 170’5″.

400 METER RUN (Girls) – Imani Davis, 5th at last year’s state D2 meet will compete against Nautica Hill of Warren Harding. Hill is currently ranked 6th in Ohio (58.51), Davis is ranked 9th (59.02)

800 METER RUN (Boys) – Ryan Adams returns currently ranked 4th in the state (1:55.12). He was last years D2 boys champion in at the state meet.

Poland Invitational Athletes Gain National Recognition by U.S. Paralympic Committee

Ravenna Southeast’s Jenna Fesemyer was awarded the 2014 National Girls Field Athlete of the Year. Fesemyer was named as an All-American in the 800 meter, discus, shot put and javelin. Jenna competed in the 2014 Poland Invitational.

Randy McMullen from Kent Roosevelt was named as an All-American in the 1500 meter, discus and shot put. Randy was the first wheelchair athlete to compete at Poland in 2013. He also competed in 2014 where he set the state shot put record.

The OHSAA made history in 2013 by hosting wheelchair events at its state track and field championships. Through the continuing growth and success of Ohio Paralympic athletes, Ohio continues to set the bar for high school Paralympic athletics.

Congratulations to both of these fine athletes.

Poland Invitational Meet Manager John Jeren is shown here at the Boardman Cross Country regional meet  with 2012 Olympian Bridget Franek. Bridget was in town to run the Peace Race. Bridget was a member of the 2012 Olympic Team in the 3000 steeplechase. In 2004 at the 9th Poland Invitational Bridget set the 1600 meter run record in 5:07.95 as a 10th grader. She currently holds the State Record in the Division 2 3200 meter run at 10:16.50 and until 2014 held the State Record in the 1600 meter run at 4:50.10.
